illy Lussiano (IL) Bun or Braid?

@jeffdonna (JD): Definitely the bun. The braid is clutch though!

(iL): How long have you been growing your hair?

(JD): Like 2 weeks. Duh.  ….About 8 years at this point I believe. I don’t keep track.

(iL):  Weirdest hair encounter/ comment(s)?

(JD): Oh man. I have a few stories. But I remember this one time walking in Midtown during rush hour. There was a homeless woman sitting in a corner and as I pass by she compliments my hair and it’s length (it was in a braid.) I thanked her and kept walking to the corner (I was crossing the street) She proceeded to get up from her assumingly cozy position and began to follow me. All the while she was simultaneously clapping her hands at me and aggressively screaming, “Give it back! Give it back!” All the people on the corner were confused. I was completely freaked out and my boy just kept laughing because she continued to chase me and started looking into the sky and making a howling noise that was completely obnoxious. I weaved around a couple of people and dodged the very persistent woman. NY for you.

(iL): Your first thought when someone touches your hair without permission? 

(JD): Lol, well I don’t mind when people touch my braid. They often ask AS they touch it. Honestly I think they want my hair, or want me. I’m not upset either way. But I feel a way about when people grab my bun haha. I’ll be a little annoyed if they grab it roughly, I don’t want my bun to mess up. It’s not too big of a deal but sometimes I really like a particular way it looks…when nobody touches it. Lol. But it’s okay, I know people admire it so why be upset? 

(iL):  Favorite hair style on the ladies? One style you wish you never had to see on the ladies again?

(JD): Hmm…I’ve been drawn to the big hair/puffy look. It’s cute on girls. When done well of course. But generally I like the nice mix of “I didn’t really style it - but I don’t really have to because I’m hot.” Yea, that look lol. And of course the, “hey I’m doing my Jeff Donna bun today” - that always make me smile.

Haha what style I wish I’d never see again…Let’s see…well that look when one side of their head is shaved, let alone with silly designs on them. Not many people can pull that off, it doesn’t look bad when you can. BUT usually you can’t. Cassie got away with it. But not after she dealt with all the ridicule. I don’t look for bad hairstyles, but oh I’ll be sure to let you know if and when I see them.

(iL):  3 hair products you can live without…

(JD): -Gel - I don’t use that shit.

 -Hairspray - I sure as hell don’t use that

 -Beeswax - I don’t do my hair in cornrows anymore lol, so good riddens. I didn’t even use beeswax, I used coconut oil.

(iL):  Have you ever tasted a product because it smelled so good?

(JD): Haha I know people who have too, but no not I. I usually would just continuously smell it for several minutes with my eyes closed. Like I’m in a commercial.

(iL):  Do you put your hair into that long braid yourself? 

(JD): Yes I do. *proud stance* I had to learn or I’d suffer looking sloppy out here. We can thank good ‘ol Youtube for that lol. But I really taught myself. Just remembering how girls would do it and I’d just try it out in the mirror until it worked.

(iL): Ever had the urge or come close to cutting your hair?

(JD): NOPE!

(iL): Favorite comment(s) you hear about your hair?

(JD): “You’re hair is godly”

“Can I play in your hair ;)”

“I’ll pay you my life for your hair”

…Things of that nature lol.

(iL):  Any tips or advice for anyone trying step the hair all the way up to get like you?

(JD): Just quit.

Lol. I would just tell them to take care of it. Use what products you have to but don’t overdo it. Coin your style(s). Oh and if you’re a man, play it cool, don’t put so much emphasis on it, don’t be a girl about it. You’re a man. Don’t take mirror pictures with your hair down, please. Just do your thing. Let people love it.

3 Helpful things to help you get from one re-twist to the next in your early stages are…

-Keep your hair wrapped at night

-Palm roll/twist if needed/the length permits.

-Use about a dime-quarter size of a light oil/serum… apply it to your locs/scalp to add a bit of shine/moisture/fresh sent.

Other than this you really don’t need to fuss with them in-between re-twists early on they need to take their course.
